Habitual Behavior of Hermit Kingdoms, Shared
Kim Jong Un doesn’t do it much. His father did it. And his grandfather did it as well, but at that time it was not a behavior enshrined in policy.
The leaders of the Hermit Kingdom have long relied on foreign assistance to survive. Without the constraints of polite society, as they are in a state of war with their neighbor, they may misbehave without restraint. They leverage this freedom of misbehavior to maximize the amount of foreign assistance they get.
For Kim Jong Il, I imagine that he kept it somewhere in his desk. I imagine the note to be written in a sparkly blue book, on blue lined paper, and to describe a cycle of national welfare for nefarious behaviors.
The note says: Dear Autocrat Diary, Just wanted to drop a note to myself, in case I need some more money and I forget how to do this, giggles. Step one! Misbehave, and cause fear or whathaveyou; then wait a bit of time; then come to the negotiating table so that the authorities can have a word about your behavior, and give you money and aid, and then you pretend like they solved it; then wait six months; then misbehave again, return to negotiating table for more aid and cash. Step two! You may repeat this cycle as many times as you are able. This quaint little recipe for success is accompanied by a doodle. A smiley face and a shining sun, with a note: “god king y2k baby!”
Friendship is great, and Putin and Kim have become friends. Putin, so they say, allowed Kim to look at, but not touch, his favorite Mongolian pony, Nightstar! In recognition of this intimate privilege, Kim is said to have shared a passage from his father’s secret diary, shhhhhhhh.
Whatever the truth behind the sharing of information between these intellectual giants, the sharing has apparently occurred.
Providing Putin with any reward for coming to a negotiating table that he created, is absurd. Sanctions should increase, not be lessened because the villain thinks he can manipulate the President of the United States. Dictate to our enemies. Deal with our allies. (How about a Saudi oil deal for Modi? He can buy less oil from Putin, Putin will have less money to kill people.)
Donald Trump can do what Joe Biden did not, he can close the skies and prevent Putin’s Russia from killing more people. He can double the amount of supply going to Ukraine, right now. He can also make a tremendous mistake, and cave to Putin. I respectfully remind the soon to be president that Putin showed nude photos of the soon to be first lady, on state run television, during prime time. My understanding is the ratings were great.
