A Human Wonder

There are things in my head that I like to go back to and look at.  It’s funny how some things form up there.  I must be adding details as time slips by, and eventually, when something intrigues me, I finally look up to observe it.  In this way, I see something as a result of the aggregation of time.  A perspective, that cannot be obtained in any one moment in time, but rather, emerges from all of the moments, collected.

Recently, I took time to think about the European Union. I thought about all of the great people who worked toward the common goal of cooperation to improve their lives. Of course, I have no idea who these people were, but I see the artistry in their handiwork.

A carefully sculpted body, its only intention to support, with no meaning beyond its ability to maintain a cohesive cooperative structure.  But expressing boundless virtue through each independent nation, well defined and beautiful.  I wonder if any of these countries could survive in the same way on their own?  I am still trying to arrange it in my head, but it looks great!

These countries, by joining the European Union, are enshrined forever among peers.  Able to express their own virtue, participate in a tremendously successful market, and foster progress among their citizens while retaining a national identity that will be protected for as long as the European Union survives.  (I see this as another expression of the brilliant framework demonstrated by Mike and Bridget.  By, in a sense, giving themselves to the other, they are supported by the other, and find new gifts to bring to the world.  New hopes for the future of their people, in this case.  And confidence that they will never be erased.)

You know I love Ukraine, and I love France, and I love the United Kingdom.  (Even though it’s hard to wedge you guys into this skit.)  I have a secret, I love them all.  Italy!  Croatia!  Austria!  I see you over there, Greece, come get in on this E.U. cuddle puddle.  Belgium, Ireland, Estonia, and the Czech Republic!   The Republic of Cyprus, Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Slovenia!  Spain and Sweden know how to party!  Beautiful Romania, Malta, and Luxembourg!  Estonia, Denmark, Finland, and Germany!  Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Poland!  Diogenes would hang out in Portugal, for sure!  And Hungary, love the food!

When did this happen?  All fascinating and unique!  Jewels of human culture.  What an irreplaceable work of human art.  What a wonder the E.U. has become!

I will be very pleased when Ukraine is admitted!  Another jewel!
