The Powell Doctrine
I was thinking of the Powell Doctrine.
In reviewing the famous questions posed by Colin Powell, preceding the engagement of American forces, I started to wonder what underlying objectives were important to consider. I believe the good man wanted to reduce the damage that he knew was inevitably done by war. It seems that he advised getting it over as quickly as possible, so that fewer human beings die. He suggested only risking the lives of our warriors when they could be given a clear and obtainable objective. What also seems important is the provision of overwhelming forces, to drive the enemy to capitulation.
From my perspective as an advocate of Ukraine, no effort should be spared to end Russia’s murderous occupation. But I appreciate the commitment of American troops is unrealistic.
Our provision of material assistance to our ally constitutes our participation in a proxy war against Putin and Russia. We have a duty to our ally to help them achieve victory. Just as they would do for us, if we were in their place.
The Ukrainians have a clear and obtainable objective. Liberation of their Ukrainian land. In keeping with the spirit of the Powell Doctrine, I believe we should give our ally everything they need to drive the enemy to capitulation. Supply is the only thing they lack.
The defeat of Putin represents an important national interest for the United States. He harms our country by meddling in our elections, by poisoning the minds of our poorly educated and dimwitted. Around the world, he steals everything he can lay hands on, he murders with impunity, and destabilizes nations. Our way forward is a cooperative one, we benefit from a peaceful, and prosperous world. Putin has been excluded from that world because he is a murderous autocrat. So he now wages war against that world.
To end human suffering is a human interest. To defeat Putin is an American one.
Ukraine can achieve liberation if America provides supply. I plead to every member of the Congress of the United States, to spare no effort in organizing an overwhelming supply for our ally. Colin Powell was an American treasure, his gifts of wisdom to us: a caution against war, and a reminder to love human life.
Paradoxically, he shows us the way forward now. We can save human life through the provision of overwhelming force.
