We Are Not a Nation of Murderers
I speak now, specifically to my fellow Americans, all of them. I begin by apologizing for not recognizing your excellence before! I apologize if you haven’t had the opportunities you deserve. I for one, have every confidence that you will do your nation proud, when given the chance. I have something to say, would you do me the honor of listening?
We are not a nation of murderers. Stop trying to shoot Donald Trump.
I begin by imagining the bleak scenario in which you succeed in your shameful endeavor. You, most certainly, are dead at the hands of one of the members of our excellent Secret Service. You have altered history, and committed murder not to save democracy, but for self aggrandizement. You cannot serve democracy and commit assassination. If you believe in American democracy, assassination is not only unnecessary, but absolutely immoral. You would, by your act of murder, not only rob millions of Americans of the virtuous opportunity to choose to turn their backs on lies, but you would also absolve them of the responsibility to do so!
Some places do not have the wonderful systems of governance that we have. (I point out particularly, that these systems of governance are overseen and managed by our beautiful, devoted citizens. I fume when people attack some anonymous ‘bureaucrats.’ The contributions of our hidden heroes in public service should be celebrated!) In some of those places, I can imagine the seduction of such a course of action, particularly when there doesn’t seem to be any alternative.
But in the United States of America, many cherished Americans have given their lives for an ideal that we can all share! Can you imagine loving your country so much, that you accept the risk and die serving her? There can be no greater gift of love. The least we can do is sing their praises forever! Can you see the thin, but unbreakable ribbon of honor through the years? Did they sacrifice themselves for a nation of murderers?
We are first a nation of people, but a free nation is only possible through the rule of law. The expression of democracy through the rule of law has made our nation great. I submit that it would not honor the ultimate sacrifice of our fellow citizens to repudiate the system they died serving. I repeat, the least I can do is sing their praises forever.
And finally, and perhaps most importantly. You are far too important to me for you to throw your life away for that person. We can beat him at the box together, and you can walk away. Not only alive, but having created virtue with many, many other Americans. Together.
And I know you. You are the latest American model! The best and brightest new representative of an unbroken chain of survivors stretching back billions of years. I have every confidence in the future of this great nation.
